Cornelis mother was probably born - and lived for sure, in Amsterdam,[2] as far as we know from the (intended) marriage document of Cornelis parents, his father at Vlieland anyway! Vlieland (former also Flielandt) one of the smallest, but most beautiful Wadden islands in the North of The Netherlands.
It is estimated the time that Cornelis was born, Vlieland had around 2500 till 3000 inhabitants.[3]
Cornelis parents lived both at Vlieland and in between at Amsterdam. Trying to findsiblings or a marriage document or children for Cornelis did not give any result at Vlieland nor in Amsterdam.[4]
As son of a whaler and geographic researcher, it is very likely that Cornelis joined the VOC on the galjoot De Vergulde Vlamingh (an how coincidentally that name of the ship sounds, with two! de Vlaminghen aboard. But is it? Especially as the house of Cornelis mother Willemtje in Amsterdam - which was sold around 1687, situated at the Lindengracht in Amsterdam - was named De Vergulde Roemer?!![5])
Cornelis joined most likely in 1688 as "jongen" (boy), the lowest rank aboard as his father was Skipper on the ship that year, and they sailed to Batavia and Malacca. [6][7] Cornelis was probably just 10 years old then. Cornelis resigned 6 years later in 1694, earned 265 guilders (worth nowadays: € 2 760.83). [8]
In 1696, age 18 years, Cornelis rejoins the VOC on a ship that accompanies his fathers important mission to find lost VOC ships and crew back and to explore New Holland (the west-site of Australia).[7]
The new ship to be built, a comfortable frigate of 110 -112 feet long, would serve as flagship of the Commander - Willem de Vlamingh (Cornelis' father). It was named Geelvinck after Joan Geelvinck, member of the Amsterdam VOC Board of XVII gentlemen. The Geelvinck[9] would be accompanied by the Nijptang,[10] with Gerrit Collaert as Skipper, and the Wezeltje,[11] with Laurens Theuniszoon Zeeman as Skipper. The latter died en route and was replaced by Cornelis de Vlamingh (the son of Willem).
The Muster Register, which kept a record of all departing Company ships, noted that Geelvinck had 130 people on board, Nijptang 50 and Wezeltje 14.[7]
In 1699 Cornelis joined the VOC as skipper on the ship Huis te Bijweg, sailing to Batavia via The Cape of Good Hope,[12] returning in 1701 on the ship Stad Keulen[13]
Cornelis skippered the Nichtevegt in 1703 till 1715, between The Netherlands, Batavia and Persia. Earned in those 12 years 11574 guilders, worth nowadays about € 121 357.13.[14]
Cornelis died in 1735 in Amsterdam and was burried in Vlieland. His body was transported to Oost-Vlieland for fl. 30. [15][16]
